In today's litigious society, it is vital that Raters have adequate insurance coverage. Not having proper coverage can put your business at risk and because an increasing number of your business partners are requiring proof of liability insurance before they’ll work with you, it can also make it difficult for you to grow your business.
As a RESNET Residential Home Energy Rater, there are a number of insurance coverages available to you through the endorsed program. It is strongly recommended that you maintain the proper coverages in order to protect you and/or your business from potential law suits or accidents that may occur as you operate your business.
The information below provides a summary of the key coverages that Raters should maintain. Keep in mind that the policies providing these coverages for RESNET members are ideal for sole proprietors and small businesses. They can also be applicable to RESNET members with larger operations but the scope of these coverages is intended for Home Energy Raters and Home Inspectors. Unique or non-standard services that you may provide may not be included in the coverage and may not be available via an endorsement.
General Liability, a key coverage for Home Energy Raters, is designed to protect the insured from liability claims brought by third parties who allege the insured is responsible for bodily injury or property damage caused to them. Coverage is provided for these types of accidents that occur at a work site or at a client’s location. While General Liability insurance is probably the most basic form of commercial insurance, these policies typically contain a professional services exclusion that takes away coverage for lawsuits arising out of the rendering of or failure to render professional services, leaving what could prove to be a huge gap in coverage.
Professional Liability insurance, also referred to as Errors & Omissions (E&O) Liability, is designed to fill this gap. Because these types of claims can be among the most expensive brought against a professional, this is a very important gap to fill. Having Professional Liability coverage in place helps safeguard the assets of your company and provides defense against claims that may or may not be valid.
Property insurance should also be considered by Raters to protect against loss caused by damage to real property (buildings/structures) and/or personal property (contents) owned by the business.
To help simplify the insurance buying process for RESNET members, RESNET has partnered with Lockton Affinity, LLC to offer the Professional Liability (PL), General Liability (GL) and Property coverages you need to protect your business. The RESNET Insurance Program is only available to RESNET Raters and Home Inspectors and provides exclusive rates not available anywhere else. Members can purchase all three coverages or a combination of just PL, PL/GL or Property/GL.
